Joseph Heger, labor representative of the United Way of Siouxland was born in Hartington, Nebraska in 1928. In 1953 Heger began work at Swift & Company packinghouse in Sioux City, Iowa where he was a member of the United Packinghouse Workers of American (UPWA) Local 71. Heger worked in various departments at Swift and was involved in several strikes. In 1967 he became labor representative for the United Way. As the labor liason Heger referred union members to public and private assistance organizations, ran union counseling and consumer education courses, and solicited money from area unions.
