Albert Merritt Ewert was born in Rawlins, Wyoming Territory, in 1886. His parents were Rev. A.L.T. Ewert and Laura Miller Ewert. He had two brothers, Arthur and Earl, and three sisters, Anna, Ethel and Carol. Albert attended Greer College and Northwestern University. Like his father before him, Albert became a Methodist pastor. He married Anna Mabel Beard on March 25, 1908, and had two children, Kathleen Ewert Lourim (born in 1912) and Quentin Albert Ewert (born in 1915). In 1916, Albert was ordained an Episocpal priest. In 1921, the family moved permanently back to Michigan. Rev. Ewert served as rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Grand Ledge, Michigan, and as a chaplain of the Michigan National Guard 119th Field Artillery. He served briefly as rector of the Epiphany Episcopal Chursh in Detroit before returning to Trinity in 1926. In 1933, Albert was appointed chaplain of the Michigan State Prison. In 1935, he left this position for the National Youth Administration Michigan's state staff. Albert was again called to duty within the Michigan penal system, serving with a commission studying the penal system, serving as Deputy Assistant Director of Probation, and later as Director of Probation before retiring in 1952. He was also an accomplished artist, author and composer. He passed away in Grand Ledge, Michigan in 1984, at the age of 98.
