The authors were members of Germantown Meeting, a Particular Meeting in Philadelphia within the hierarchical structure of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The questions posed by their protest were so weighty, it was handed up the hierarchal chain to Dublin Monthly Meeting, then Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting, ending finally with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Germantown was established as a Particular Meeting under Abington Monthly Meeting in 1687; Abington Meeting was often alluded to as Dublin Monthly Meeting after the township in which it was located. Dublin Monthly Meeting was set up in 1687 and laid down in 1710. Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting and Philadelphia Yearly Meeting are still active. The current Germantown Monthly Meeting in Philadelphia was set up in 1906.
