• 1924 May 1: Born to Pearl Ann Adams and Benjamin James Swanson, in Danville, Virginia.
• 1941: Graduated from John M. Langston High School, Danville, Virginia.
• 1945: Received A. B. degree from Howard University, majoring in Political Science.
• 1948: Received L.L.B. degree from the Howard University School of Law.
• 1948 - 49 : Worked with the law firm of Hill, Martin and Robinson, Richmond, Virginia.
• 1950: January through July, was associated with Jerry L. Williams, Esq., Danville, Va. Instituted suit against the University of Virginia to gain admission to its Law School.
• 1950: Entered the University of Virginia Law School pursuant to the ruling of the Federal Court, the first Negro student at the University of Virginia.
• 1951: Received a Master of Laws, University of Virginia Law School.
