The Los Angeles Theatre Center (formerly the Los Angeles Actors' Theatre founded in 1975 in Hollywood, Calif.) opened in 1985 in a renovated bank building in downtown Los Angeles as a key component of an urban renewal plan that was not completed. As a multi-cultural professional theater and performance laboratory promoting both contemporary and established American plays of social or political relevance, the company featured music, dance, poetry, multi-media events and performance art. Educational programs, internships and workshops on ethnic theatre such as the Latino Theatre Lab, acting and writing were also offered in the multi-theatre complex. A significant portion of the LATC audience was from non-white communities. LAAT/LATC mounted more than 100 productions. Its programming was multi-cultural, nonmainstream and adventurous, and its artistic staff and casts included many talented actors, designers, and directors. The internationally recognized and award-winning Los Angeles Theatre Center was closed in October 1991 due to inadequate funding.
