Variant namesThe International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 1179 is based in Portsmouth, Ohio. The Bylaws of System Council No. 25 govern IBEW 1179, of which it is a part, having jurisdiction over all electrical work on the Norfolk and Western Railway and the Ann Arbor Railway. As of 1979, the national IBEW restructured the unions, and Local 1179 is now part of Local 575 in District 4.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 88 based in Chillicothe, Ohio, was chartered in 1902 as Local 248. In 1916, it was recharted as Local 88, a telephone or telecommunications worker unit. As of 1979, the IBEW restructured the unions, and the Chillicothe IBEW became part of the Local 578 in District 4.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 20 was originally formed as Local 643 on January 28, 1909. Its mission was to negotiate for better working conditions, including wages, hours worked and benefits for electrical workers. Throughout the years, the local number changed from 643 to 644 (on August 25, 1909) and then to 116 (on May 1, 1912). Meanwhile, in Dallas, Local 1272 requested to be absorbed by Local 59 in 1947. In 1998, Locals 116 and 59 merged to form Local 20, which is the current local number.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 213 was formed in 1901. The following year, women telephone operaters were organized into an auxiliary of 213, one of the first successful attempts at organizing women workers in British Columbia. Strained relations between the local and its international headquarters were marked by such events as the suspension of its charter in 1919 and allegations of communist sympathies in the 1950s.
