American Peace Mobilization was organized during the Emergency Peace Mobilization, Chicago, Aug. 31- Sept. 2, 1940, which was called by the Committee to Defend America by Keeping Out of War and the People's Federation for Peace (Chicago). National headquarters were set up first in Washington, then moved to New York City. American Peace Mobilization did effective local organizational work in most of the large cities of America -- particularly among organized labor and the political left. National peace rallies were held as well as a "perpetual peace vigil". After the declaration of war on Russia by Germany, June 21, 1941, the American Peace Mobilization reversed its philosophy, changed its name to American People's Mobilization, and supported the war on the basis of anti-fascism.
