Stratton, William G.

Illinois governor, 1953-1961; state treasurer, 1943-1945, 1951-1953; Illinois Congressman at large, 1941-1943, 1947-1949. As governor he dealt with reapportionment, highway building and maintenance, education, establishing the Department of Personnel, Governors Conferences and Executive Mansion renovation. As treasurer he modernized the office to promote efficiency. As congressman he served on the Banking and Currency Committee and sponsored legislation allowing displaced persons from Europe to immigrate to the United States. Stratton worked for Kemper Insurance and then the Canteen Corporation until his retirement in 1984. He then worked for the Chicago Bank of Commerce and was co-chairman of Governor Thompson's "Committee of 800" to work for a tax increase. In 1997 he and Senator Paul Simon chaired the Illinois Campaign Finance Task Force. Stratton died in 2001 at the age of 86.
