Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO

Hide Profile

The Iowa Federation of Labor (IFL), begun in 1892, was formed to act as a unified voice for labor concerns and organizations in Iowa. Chartered by the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1894, the organization underwent organizational changes which paralleled the AFL's split into 2 groups (the AFL and the CIO) and its eventual reunification as the AFL-CIO. The IFL's annual conventions serve as its governing body. The IFL has been politically active, pressing for legislation and political candidates favorable to workers and their communities. Through educational and scholarship programs offered in conjunction with educational institutions the federation works to educate workers regarding labor issues.
