Variant namesThe National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in New York in 1909. In May of 1910, the second conference was held and took the official NAACP name. The goal of the NAACP is the establishment of full and equal rights for Americans of all races in respect to the security of the person, voting, housing, treatment in the courts, health facilities, public facilities, and accommodations.

Citizens for Decent Literature was founded by attorney Charles H. Keating, Jr. in 1957 with the primary goal of informing the public about the corrupting influence of obscenity. In 1973 the organization changed its name to Citizens for Decency through Law.

The Gay Liberator was an underground newspaper published in Detroit by Pansy Press, an independent gay media collective. The publication ran from 1970 until 1976. It published news articles (national and international) from within the gay and lesbian community. Volumes also contained book reviews, poetry, interviews, short fiction, classifieds, personals, and advertisements for gay- and lesbian-friendly bars and restaurants.

The first Citizens' Councils formed in Mississippi to protest the Brown v. Board of Education decision. The group quickly spread to every state in the South. Local chapters were members of the Citizens' Councils of America.
