Detroit lawyer, member of the Detroit Board of Education (1847-1869), called the "Father of the High School."
Born in Carlistle, Penn. on Aug. 29, 1821, Divie Bethune Duffield moved with his parents to Philadelphia in 1835. He graduated from Yale University in 1840 and Yale Law School in 1841. He had come to Detroit in 1839, and was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1843. Duffield became city attorney in 1847. As a member of the Detroit Board of Education from 1847 to 1869, he was called "Father of the High School". Duffield was the author of several poems. He died in Detroit on Mar 12, 1891.
