George Otis Smith, a geologist and advocate of energy conservation, did geologic work in Michigan, Utah, Washington and New England from 1893-1906 before assuming adminstrative responsibilities for the remainder of his career. He was a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey from 1896-1907, and was director of the Survey from 1907-1930, except for 1922-1923, when he served on the United States Coal Commission. He was Commissioner of the Federal Power Commission, 1930-1933, and was involved in a Supreme Court case when the U.S. Senate tried to withdraw its confirmation of his appointment to the commission. Smith was also a delegate to the first World Power Conference in 1924 and was chair of the Federal Oil Conservation Board from 1924-1926.
