B. 1864 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England; science instructor, lecturer, author, pacifist, Quaker; visited British prisoner of war camps during World War I; promoted disarmament, internationalism, world government, and war tax resistance; as a member of the Emergency Committee of the Society of Friends during World War I, he visited and gave assistance to enemy aliens imprisoned in England; was particularly interested in the relationship of natural phenomena to political events; d. 1936.
