Professor Brown taught entomology and evolutionary theory in the Department of Entomology in the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University from 1960 until his retirement in 1991. He worked on the reclassification of the family Formicidae, the ant. Before coming to Cornell, he worked with all of the principal museum ant collections in North and South America, Western Europe, South Africa and Australia.
