Spiegelberg, Frederic, 1897-
Variant namesSpiegelberg taught religious studies and other courses in Asian studies at Stanford from 1941 until his retirement in 1960. He was voted a "great teacher" by the Student Executive Committee in 1950. Born in Germany, he obtained his doctorate at Tubingen in 1922 and a theological degree from the German Lutheran Church in 1925; in 1937 he escaped Nazi Germany with the help of Paul Tillich. Spiegelberg helped found the American Academy of Asian Studies in San Francisco in 1950 and became its director in 1951.
