In 1965, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the Roman Catholic Secreatariat for Promoting Christian Unity initiated the first phase of international Lutheran - Roman Catholic conversations. From 1973- 1984, the second phase of the dialogues were held. Produced during this time were the documents, "The Eucharist" (1978), "The Ministry in the Church (1981), and "Facing Unity (1985). The LWM's Office on Studies joined with the Bishops' Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs to publish the English text of "The Eucharist." LWM was established in 1977 as the successor body of the U.S.A. National Committee.
Of the Lutheran World Federation (USANC). In 1987, it was terminated with the establishment of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
