Guy Reed "Pete" Brainard, Jr. was a petroleum engineer who attended New Mexico Military Institute and Louisiana State University. After graduating from LSU in 1932, Brainard joined Mid-Kansas Oil & Gas and then worked for Shell Oil Company until 1942 when he left to serve in the U.S. Army. He returned to Shell Oil after the war then joined Seaboard Oil Co. of Dallas, Texas in 1948. In 1950, he became production manager and vice president of Lucerne Corporation, an independent oil producer in Dallas.
In 1956, Brainard went to work for Drilling and Exploration Company (Drilexco/D & E) and became president of the company in 1961. Sinclair Oil bought D & E's production in 1963 and moved Brainard to Denver. He transferred to Tulsa as executive vice president of Sinclair Oil and Gas. When the company merged with Atlantic Richfield in 1969, he became manager of the Mid-Continent District. Brainard retired from ARCO in 1975 to raise cattle in Oklahoma.
