Organizational History

The Mott Memorial Fund was created in September 1992 and chaired by Dick Trudeau. Several people participated in the fund's activities over the years, most notably Mott's sons, William Penn Mott III and John Mott, and the former publisher of Sunset Magazine, L.W. "Bill" Lane, Jr. Among the accomplishments of the William Penn Mott, Jr. Memorial Fund were the naming of the Mott Longhouse at the YMCA of the East Bay, Camp Loma Mar; Mott's posthumous election to the National Recreation and Park Association's Hall of Fame; a major contribution to the Golden Gate National Parks Association for the William Penn Mott, Jr. Visitors Center at the Presidio; and the publication of Mott's biography, Prophet of the Parks. The Fund was dissolved after its objectives were reached.
