In March 1972 Chancellor Ferebee Taylor requested the faculty Committee on University Government and the Faculty Hearings Committee to act jointly as the Tenure Study Committee and to determine the relationship between the university at Chapel Hill's tenure policies and the American Association of University Professors' guidelines on tenure. The committee's report and proposed tenure policies and regulations were adopted in 1973. In July 1975 Taylor reconvened the committee for the purpose of drafting a revision of the 1973 policies and regulations that would bring them into conformity with the Code of the University of North Carolina System.
