Shafter, Oscar Lovell, 1812-1873
Variant namesOscar L. Shafter, an attorney from Vermont, came to California in 1854, having been offered a one-year position in a prestigious San Francisco law firm. At year's end he was engaged in a successful practice and believing the California climate to be better for his family's health, he sent for his wife and two daughters to join him. During the next eight years he established his reputation as an attorney, and in 1863 he was named an associate justice of the California Supreme Court. He served in this position only four years, however. Due to failing health, he resigned in 1868 and died in 1873.
