Evelyn Baring (1841-1917), 6th son of Henry Baring, M.P., was ADC to the Governor of the Ionian Islands 1861; Private Secretary to the Viceroy of India 1872-1876; Commissioner of the Egyptian Public Debt 1877-1879; Comptroller General in Egypt 1879-1880; Financial member of the council of the Viceroy of India 1880-1883; Consul General and Minister Plenipotentiary in Egypt 1883-1907. He was made KCB 1887, and created Baron Cromer 1892, Viscount 1899, Earl of Cromer 1901. His first wife Ethel Stanley died 1898, and he married secondly in 1901 Lady Katherine Georgiana Louisa Thynne (1865-1933), daughter of the 4th Marquess of Bath. (Their son, Evelyn Baring, 1st Baron Howick of Glendale, married Lady Mary Grey, daughter of 5th Earl Grey and heiress to Howick).
