Alexander Greene was elected to Rockville City Council from 1954 to 1958, and served as Mayor from 1958 to 1962.

He joined the Planning Commission under the Department of Housing and Community Development in 1962, and lobbied successfully for the Housing Opportunities Act in 1974. In 1979 he became intergovernmental Programs Coordinator and Top-Level Advisor to County Executive Charles Gilchrist. In this capacity he dealt with problem of sewage treatment facilities, the opening of Oaks Landfill near Laytonsville, and the transfer of the County's cable system from Tribune-United to Cable TV Montgomery. He served as an aide to County Executive Sidney Kramer, and retired from government service in 1988.
