Lawyer and merchant of Philadelphia. Morris was prominent in the East India trade. In 1793-94 he was speaker of the Pennsylania Senate. From 1800 to 1806 he was a director of the Bank of North America, and from 1806 to 1817 a trustee of the University of Pennsylania.

Anthony Morris was a lawyer and merchant in Philadelphia, Pa. Born Feb. 10, 1766, he was the son of Samuel Morris (1734-1812) and Rebecca Wistar. He attended Quaker schools and the University of Pennsylvania from which he graduated in 1783. Morris became speaker of the Pennsylvania Senate at the age of 27. He served as a legate to Spain under James Madison. Morris also had significant mercantile interests. Morris married Mary Smith Pemberton, the daughter of James Pemberton (1723-1809); the two had four children. In 1795, he began construction of the family home in Whitemarsh Twp. that became known as "The Highlands." He also had significant land holdings in the vicinity of Philadelphia.
