Jerry Donohue attended Dartmouth College receiving his A.B. in 1941 and his M.A. in 1943. He studied under Linus Pauling at California Institute of Technology and took his Ph. D. in 1947. His academic career included both research and tenured teaching positions with, Cal Tech, 1947-1952; University of Southern California, 1953-1966; and the University of Pennsylvania, 1966-1985.

Donohue's contributions to the field of Chemistry were international in scope. As a Guggenheim Fellow in 1952 he assisted Francis Crick and John D. Watson with building a DNA model. He actively researched hydrogen-bonded compounds and sulphur compounds. He specialized in crystal structures and analysis, specifically of molecules relating to biology and hydrogen bonding. His work in elemental structures led to the publication of his book, The Structures of the Elements in 1974. He continued to have an impact on research in the field of Chemistry throughout his life. Donohue died in Philadelphia on February 13, 1985.
