Holman, Anna Eveleth, 1892-1969

Anna Eveleth Holman graduated from Radcliffe College in 1914. A science teacher, she was an active alumna, and was editor of the Radcliffe Quarterly (1942-1952, 1954-1964).

Science teacher (Radcliffe, A.B., 1914; Harvard Graduate School of Education, Ed.M., 1928), Holman was head (April 1919-May 1920) of the Radcliffe Unit in France established by the Radcliffe Alumnae Association War Work Committee to help with the reconstruction of French villages after World War I. Members of the unit were drivers and nurses aides for the French Red Cross. Holman was stationed at Buzy. From 1921 to 1952, she taught at the Winsor School in Boston.

Anna Eveleth Holman, science teacher, was born July 11, 1892 in Newton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Silas Whitcomb Holman and Lydia (Newman) Holman. She graduated from Brookline High School (1909), Radcliffe College (A.B., 1914), and Harvard Graduate School of Education (Ed.M., 1928). AEH began her teaching career at St. Helen's Hall, Portland, Oregon (1914-1916) and Ferry Hall, Lake Forest, Illinois (1916-1921), but most of her career was spent at The Winsor School in Boston (1921-1952). After her retirement AEH taught various continuing education courses in California (1952-1954), and then returned to teach at Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts (1954-1957). She was also active in various science organizations and in the Radcliffe College Alumnae Association.

From April 1919 to May 1920 AEH took a leave from Ferry Hall to serve as head of the Radcliffe Unit in France. This Unit was established by the Radcliffe Alumnae Association War Work Committee to help "Le Village Reconstitue" with the reconstruction of French villages destroyed during World War I. Members of this Unit served as motor drivers and nurses' aides under the patronage of three societies of the French Red Cross.

Anna Eveleth Holman was born in Newton, MA, on July 11, 1892 and died on Concord on April 14, 1965. AEH was graduated from Brookline High School and from Radcliffe College in 1914 with a magna cum laude in English. She was a charter member of the Iota chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1918, she was sent overseas by the War Work Committee of Radcliffe to work with the French Red Cross. She received an Ed.M. from Harvard in 1928 and taught at both Windsor and Dana Hall Schools. AEH had an intense interest in science--and in youth --and served for nearly twenty years on the Massachusetts State Science Fair Commission. She was also a member of the Federation of Atomic Scientists. She spent 1952-1954 in California, where she taught teachers how to teach science to young children. From 1937-1942, she was a Radcliffe Alumna Trustee. As editor of the Radcliffe Quarterly from 1942-1952 and 1954-1964, she brought national distinction to the magazine. In 1966, AEH was one of the two recipients to receive the Alumnae Recognition Award.
