William Workman was born in Georgia, but moved to Davidson, N.C., in 1951 when his father joined the Davidson College Psychology Department. He graduated from Davidson in 1962 and earned a degree in voice performance from the Curtis Institute of Music in 1965. Mr. Workman made his operatic debut in 1958, appearing as Morales in the Charlotte Opera Association's production of Carmen. Since then, he has sung with many operatic groups, including the Hamburg State Opera, the Frankfurt Opera Company, the Paris Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, and many others. He has performed leider and concert tours in Europe, Australia, and the U.S. He has retired from opera and now teaches in Germany.
