Francis Hueffer was an author and music critic. Born in Germany, he was educated throughout Europe, and settled in England just before the Franco-Prussian War. He wrote for and edited several publications, becoming increasingly influential. Hueffer was inspired by Schopenhauer, and helped popularize Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt in England. He published numerous monographs, and wrote libretti for musical plays. He married the daughter of artist Ford Madox Brown, Catherine, and their son, Ford Madox Ford, included reminiscences of his father in various novels.
