Wilkinson Call was the nephew of the 3rd/5th Territorial Governor of Florida, Richard Keith Call. He studied law and was admitted to the Florida bar in Jacksonville. He served as an Adjutant General in the Confederate Army and was originally elected to the Senate as a Democrat in 1865, but was not allowed to take his seat because of Reconstruction. After Reconstruction he was reelected in 1879 and served as Senator until 1897.
He then retired and continued to live in Washington, D.C. until his death in 1910.
