Cardella, Philip, 1846-1901.
Philip Cardella was born in Italy in 1846. He was transferred from the Rome Province of the Society of Jesus to the Maryland-New York Province in 1882. Fr. Cardella spent much of his life ministering to the Spanish-speaking community of New York City. He strove to build a church for them, even travelling to Mexico to raise money for it, but failed to reach his goal. For a short while in 1898 he was Tertiary Instructor at the Frederick, Md., novitiate, and for some years served as director of the quarterly conferences of the New York Archdiocesan clergy. Fr. Cardella died in 1901.
