James Frances Downs, 1923-1999, was an anthropologist, professor, naval officer, prolific author, and owner of International Bridge, Inc., an international consulting firm. He was raised in Calif. and a resident of Japan at the time of his death. He wrote books about the Washoe Indians of Nev. and Calif., Navajo Indians, cultural and physical anthropology, and inter-cultural issues; and articles about Japanese-U.S. relations, horse racing, and other topics.
