Warren L. d'Azevedo joined the faculty of the University of Nevada in 1963. The anthropology department was initiated under joint sponsorship with the Desert Research Institute. Originally combined with the psychology department and the sociology department, it became separate in 1963, but still received a joint position with the Desert Research Institute. In 1967, the anthropology department was established and d'Azevedo was appointed the first chairman.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, interest in anthropological programs at the University of Nevada developed with the support of the Desert Research Institute and its Center for Western North American Studies. The Anthropology Department was initiated under jount sponsorship with the Desert Research Institute with funds from private and government foundations. Warren L. D'Azevedo joined the Anthropology Department in 1963; he became the first chairman of the Anthropology Department when it was established as a separate department in 1967.

Warren L. d'Azevedo, Professor Anthropology, University of Nevada, Reno, 1963-1988. This collection consists of materials and records developed and used by d'Azevedo in both his University and non-University (Nevada) involvement and interest in ethnic and minority issues, c. 1959- 1975. This included the University Human Relations Action Council (later Commission) which worked with the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, UNR Black Student Union, Race Relations Center of Reno, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Nevada Intertribal Council. Also included are the records of "American Indian and Black Students at the University of Nevada, Reno: 1874-1974" published by the Department of Anthropology and includes information on other minority groups, as well as blacks and Indian. The data for this publication was gathered by d'Azevedo and his assistants from 1966-1974, and include student papers, surveys, and questionnaires.
