Founded in 1801 by politicians and public officials, bankers and merchants, lawyers and judges, scientists and engineers, architects and painters, and a host of others interested in furthering French industry, commerce, and agriculture. The society is proposed to achieve this goal by publishing a journal and systematically granting prizes, medals, and financial rewards. The society also offered scholarships to promising needly students at various schools such as the Ecole d'Alfort, the Ecole des Arts et Métiers, and the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures.
