Biographical History
Major in Revolution. Naval Officer of Boston. One of the Boston Tea Party. Famous as the subject of Homer's Poem, "The Last Leaf." "I saw him once before As he passed by the door," etc.
Merchant & grandfather of Herman Melville. Came from a Scottish background, participated in the Boston Tea Party, was a Major in the Crafts Artillery Regiment in the Revolutionary War, and was appointed Surveyor of the Port of Boston and Charleston (i.e. Collector).
