George King, pioneer Alaskan aviator, was born in Michigan on June 8, 1893. One source identifies his birthplace as "near Green Bay," another states he was born in Sault St. Marie, and still another mentions Bovee; all agree on the date. He grew up in Sumaz, Washington, near the Canadian border. After serving in World War I, King was a member of the International Boundary Survey during the summer and fall of 1920. He attented the University of Washington, majoring in mining geology and aeronautical engineering, until June 1922 when he became partners with Lt. Roy F. Jones in a commercial flying venture in Alaska. He also worked in mining in Ketchikan (reports vary as to whether he was an independent prospector or worked for others). In Octorber 1925, he attended the College of Mines in Fairbanks, Alaska, receiving a degree in geology in 1927. He mined near Fairbanks until he "got the flying bug again." He then went into business with the Bennett-Rodebaugh Airplane company. Also in 1927, King, Carl Ben Eielson, and Joe Crosson organized the Northern Consolidated Airways. King was associated with the Wilkins Arctic Expedition and had planned a "'round-the-world" flight over the the pole with Eielson until the latter's untimely death ended the project. Much of the cached gasoline for the flight was instead used in the search for Eielson's plane. King worked for Junkers of Germany as a sales and demonstration pilot with headquarters in Montreal, Canada. When he resigned from that position he became vice president in charge of development and exploration for the Unuk Valley Placer Gold Corporation. With his wife, Dorothy, King operated the King Roadhouse at Boundary, Alaska. He retired in 1964 and the couple moved to Eagle. George King died at the Fairbanks Pioneers Home in January 1969.
