Dale Ira Perry was born on 27 May 1952 in Cranston, Rhode Island. After graduating from high school in Cranston, he attended the University of Rhode Island, where he received a B.A. in Anthropology in June 1974. During his undergraduate studies he developed a strong interest in archeology and art history. In the fall of 1974, he began studying pre-columbian Spanish colonial art with Dr. Donald Robertson at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1975, Perry was awarded a Matilda Geddings Gray Fellowship to study in Guatemala. These studies led to the completion of his thesis, The Altars of La Merced in Guatemala City: With a Method of Stylistic Analysis. Perry earned his masters degree in December 1976. He continued his academic career in a Ph.D. program at the University of New Mexico, where he attained ABD status. He died before he was able to complete his dissertation.
Dale Ira Perry's interest in art patronage began while studying with Dr. Robertson at Tulane University, and continued while at the University of New Mexico. The idea of writing his dissertation on Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza first occurred in discussions with Dr. Bainbridge Bunting, and further evolved through discussions with Dr. Mary Grizzard and Dr. M. E. Smith. Palafox y Mendoza was the person responsible for finalizing the Cathedral of Puebla, Mexico. Perry believed that art patronage was an important and much neglected topic in art history. He hoped that his dissertation would help to focus more attention on the subject.
