Calvin Forbes was born in 1945 in Newark, New Jersey, attended the New School for Social Research in New York City and received his MFA from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He has taught literature, writing, and jazz history at the Arts Institute of Chicago, Emerson College, Tufts University and Howard University. Forbes came to Iowa State University in March 2009 as a guest lecturer cosponsored by the ISU Lectures Program and the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. The title of his lecture was "Metaphysics of the Blues," and these letterpress prints were presented as a gift to Iowa State University by Forbes on the occasion of his visit.
