The Department of Development was established in 1959 (1959 NM Laws, Chp. 58, Sec. 1-11). In 1977 the Department of Development was abolished and its functions were transferred to the newly created Commerce and Industry Department. The Commerce and Industry Department was abolished in 1983 and its duties were split between two newly created agencies: Economic Development and Tourism, and Regulation and Licensing. In 1991 the Economic Development and Tourism Department was abolished and its duties were split between two newly created agencies: Economic Development, and Tourism (1991 NM Laws, Chp. 21, Sec. 1-47).
