Organized in 1924 as the Texas Band Teachers Association, and renamed in 1937 as the Texas Band and Orchestra Association. Became the Texas Music Educators Association in 1938. Sponsors contests and promotes music education in the public schools, colleges and universities of Texas.

The association strives to provide professional growth opportunities, to encourage communication and interaction among music education professionals, and to improve the states of music education in Texas by fostering public support and cultivating appreciation of and involvement in music.

The association provides its members with a variety of benefits and services, including an online directory for communication among music educators, clinic recordings, job and resume assistance, publications, and scholarships.
