United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Division of Mass Media

Hide Profile

The Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. began religious broadcasting in the 1920s; in 1942 the General Assembly established a Special Committee on Religious Radio and later a Dept. of Radio and Television under the General Council to supervise broadcasting work; the Board of National Missions also established an Office for Religious Broadcasting; in 1959 these were combined under the BNM as the Division of Radio and Television; renamed the Division of Radio, Television and Audiovisuals in 1965; renamed the Division of Mass Media in 1967. These agencies were all primarily concerned with using the media to spread the Gospel, through sermon hours, religious drama, and promotional spots; there was also extensive cooperation with other protestant denominations with and through ecumenical bodies such as the National Council of Churches. After 1972 the functions of the Division of Mass Media were assigned to the Division of Communications-Interpretation of the Support Agency.
