James Merrill Safford taught chemistry, biology and geology, and was famous for his geological investigations of Tennessee. During his 52-year career, he was employed by Cumberland University, the University of Nashville, and Vanderbilt University. He also served as the State Geologist for Tennessee. His classic book and map, The geology of Tennessee, was published in 1869.
