Moult, Bessie

Hide Profile

Bessie Moult was the wife of Thomas Moult (1893-1974), British critic and novelist known for his compilations of poetry.

Edna Davis Romig (b. 1889) was a professor of English for 36 years, most of them spent at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She published several volumes of poetry and a book on Walt Whitman. Friends with Robert and Elinor Frost, Romig was asked by the couple to write their biography, a project that was researched but never completed. She retired from teaching in 1961 and moved to Estes Park, Colorado.

John Edward Masefield (1878-1967) was an award winning poet and novelist best known for his portrayal of the common man, as seen in his The Everlasting Mercy (1911). Following the outbreak of World War I, Masefield travelled to the Dardanelles with the British Red Cross and, upon his return published Gallipoli (1916), an account of war that highlighted the struggle and heroism of the common soldier. During the 1920's, Masefield, together with his wife and children, became involved with drama and live poetry readings and set up in a theatre in his home near Oxford. During the 1930's and 1940's, Masefield was poet laureate (1930), president of the Society of Authors (from 1937) and of the National Book League (1944-9), and elected to the Order of Merit (1935).
