Samuel Thompson became a linesman with the Electric Telegraph Service on Cape York Peninsula. He was killed in a riding accident at Musgrave, North Queensland on 2nd January 1919. The name of the goldfield was confirmed from: "Official Handbook of the Territory of New Guinea administered by the Commonwealth of Australia under mandate from the Council of the League of Nations".
