The descendants of John Heriot (1664-1725) of Scotland emigrated to Canada and South Carolina. Robert Heriot (1739-1792) emigrated to South Carolina in 1759 and settled in Georgetown, where he became a merchant and plantation owner and married Mary Ouldfield (daughter of John Ouldfield and Anne LaRoche). Robert Heriot was commissioned a captain of light infantry in the Continental Army in 1776 and promoted to colonel in 1779. Following the war Heriot became a S.C. Representative for his parish (All Saints). Edgar LaRoche Heriot (1825-1904), the grandson of Robert Heriot, settled in Tallahassee (Fla.) and married Clara Hayward in 1857. Descendants of Robert Heriot settled in various parts of the United States including South Carolina, New York, Florida, and California.
