Native of Charleston, S.C.; student in England who entered the Inner Temple in London in 1752, traveled in Europe widely before being called to the English bar; returned to South Carolina in 1754; served as speaker of the South Carolina House of Commons, but resigned, and in 1773 he left South Carolina for England for health reasons.
