Biographical History

Charleston, S.C. attorney, plantation owner, and South Carolina legislator. He was the son of Gabriel Manigault (1704-1781) and Ann Ashby Manigault (d. 1782).

Native of Charleston, S.C.; student in England who entered the Inner Temple in London in 1752, traveled in Europe widely before being called to the English bar; returned to South Carolina in 1754; served as speaker of the South Carolina House of Commons, but resigned, and in 1773 he left South Carolina for England for health reasons.
