James Hayes, born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1907, was trained in the 1920's at the Chicago Art Institute under Ernst Detterer, who had studied with Edward Johnston, the Englishman responsible for the twentieth-century revival of the art of callligraphy. These influences fed Hayes' interest in historical scripts and their modern application; he studied not only Western scripts, but also Egyptian hieroglyphics and Asian calligraphy, design, and illustration. He led the Newberry Library Calligraphy Study Group for fifteen years and designed and installed a Newberry Library exhibition on the history of the Roman letter in 1952. Hayes worked for the R.R.
