Hayes, James, 1907-1993

James Hayes (1907-1993) was born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1907 and trained in the 1920's at the Chicago Art Institute under Ernst Detterer. He developed an interest in historical scripts and their modern application and studied not only Western scripts, but also Egyptian hieroglyphics and Asian calligraphy, design, and illustration. Hayes led the Newberry Library Calligraphy Study Group for 15 years and designed and installed a Newberry Library exhibition on the history of the Roman letter in 1952. Hayes worked for the R.R. Donnelly & Sons Lakeside Press in Chicago for over 50 years. After moving to Woodland Park, Colorado in 1972, he taught workshops for the Colorado Calligrapher's Guild and was named honorary member in 1980.
