The Central Canal waterway project was designed to link the Wabash and Erie Canal with cities throughout Indiana and Ohio. Construction began in 1836 but by the end of the decade the project was stopped due to fraud, and financial panic. John Tipton (1786-1839) served in the army under William Henry Harrison and rose through the ranks to become a brigadier general. When Indiana became a state he served in the state legislatrue and in 1831 was elected to the Senate. He served one term and retired from politics.
