The Carl V. Lachmund collection represents the musical career of Carl Lachmund, a student of Franz Liszt, and Lachmund's subsequent devotion to the remembrance of Liszt's personality and the advancement of his music.

Lachmund was Liszt's student from 1882 to 1884, established the Lachmund Conservatory of Music, and wrote a book "Living With Liszt" about his student years in Weimar. Lachmund and his first wife Caroline wrote many articles about Liszt, life in Weimar, and Wagner's works for musical papers in the United States.
