Joel Aldrich Matteson (1808-1873), Democratic Governor of Illinois (1853-1857), was born at Watertown, N. Y. on Aug. 8, 1808. Matteson engaged in various occupations including running businesses in Prescott, Ontario and Brownsville, N.Y.; teaching school; and being a foreman on the first railroad in South Carolina (1831). After marrying Mary Fish at Watertown on Oct. 7, 1832, Matteson came to Illinois (ca. 1834), becoming a contractor on the Illinois and Michigan Canal and engaging in manufacturing at Joliet. From 1842-1853, Matteson served as a State Senator. His term as Governor (1853-1857) was marked by the Bloomington Convention of 1856, the Kansas Nebraska bill debate and the reduction of Illinois state debt. Matteson made an unsuccessful bid against Lyman Trumbull for the U. S. Senate in 1855. After retiring as Governor, Matteson traveled extensively in Europe. He moved to Chicago, where he was lessee and president of the Chicago and Alton Railroad. His death occurred in Chicago on Jan. 31, 1873.
